- Do notify local shelters and rescue groups and provide a flier regarding the found pet. Do be sure to include shelters in surrounding areas, in case the pet has somehow traveled from its original location.
- Do have the pet checked for a microchip. Most Shelters/Rescues and local veterinary offices will be able to check for a chip. Many independent rescuers also keep a microchip scanner on hand and can assist. Use a microchip look up such as the one at the link below to determine the chip maker and who best to call to obtain owner information.

Rehoming a Pet
Advice:
-
Don't wait until the last minute.
-
Do start promoting your pet as early as possible so he/she can find a good, safe home.
-
Do interview the new potential owner to ensure a good fit and Don't just give you pet to the first person who asks. E.g. If you give a dog who is not good with cats to a family that has cats- the dog will likely be dumped or taken to a shelter soon after rehoming.
-
Do ask local shelters and rescues what they can do for you to help you rehome your pet. You may be able to foster the pet for them, or they may be able to courtesy post your pet for you.
-
Do charge a rehoming fee so those evil folks who take free dogs to use as bait dogs for dog fighting or puppies/kittens to feed to their snakes are deterred. Many of these evil folks send their wife and kids to pick up your pet so you would never suspect them.
-
Do make fliers with good information and clear pictures of your pet to post in your local and regional veterinary offices and on bulletin boards in feed supply stores, and other places where a new potential owner might see your pet.
-
Do talk to others about rehoming your pet and ask them to share with potential pet owners.
-
Do get your pets shots up to date and preferably get them fixed and microchipped if possible. This increases their adoptability for new pet owners and makes taking them in more appealing.
-
Do make a folder for your pet to transfer all applicable records you may have.
-
Don't be afraid to ask for references or check with local shelters/rescues to see if that person might be on a do not adopt list.
-
Don't be afraid to ask local rescues for help in screening potential adopters. The worst they can say is no and they may be able to offer some tips.
